Nursie, come over here and hold my hand
Nursie, there’s something I can’t understand
‘Round my heart I’ve got a funny pain
Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! It’s coming on again
Nursie, come over here and hold my hand
I feel awful shy
Nursie, when I look at you
My heart goes goo-goo-goo
Nursie, Nursie, I’m getting worsie
What’ya gonna do?
Every day in the park
When the troops are marching by
There’s a nurse, what a nurse
And she catches every eye
What a style, what a smile
Can you wonder why they fall?
From the Colonel to the Private
You’ll hear the Army call
“Nursie, come over here and hold my hand
Nursie, there’s something I can’t understand
Can’t you see, I cannot stand at ease
Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! I’m knocking at the knees”
“Nursie, come over here and hold my hand
Oh I feel awful shy
Nursie, when I look at you
My heart goes goo-goo-goo
Nursie, Nursie, I’m getting worsie
What’ya gonna do?”
Male vocalist: Oh, Nursie!
Yes, Sir?
MV: Oh, Nursie, come over here
What again?
MV: Yes, come and hold my hand, you know I’ve got an awful pain
Oh, dear, dear!
MV: And when I look at you
I know, “something goes goo-goo-goo?”
MV: That’s right
Male Chorus: Nursie, nursie, we’re getting worsie
Oh, what’ya gonna do?
Nursie, come over here and hold my hand
Nursie, there’s something I can’t understand
‘Round my heart I’ve got a funny pain
Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! It’s coming on again!
Nursie, come over here and hold my hand
‘Cause I feel awful shy
Nursie, when I look at you
My heart goes goo-goo-goo
Nursie, Nursie, I’m getting worsie
What’ya gonna do?
This war themed comic song (created in Britain at the beginning of WWII) is particular interesting for its perspective shifts.
The song starts with the singer seemingly speaking to a nurse that she is enamored with. As the song goes on, she becomes the nurse! After the reveal, Carlisle puts on voices to imitate men calling for her, as a male chorus play the part of soldiers.
